Sussex 4-Hers hold public speaking contest
GEORGETOWN, Del. — A wide-ranging array of topics — from apples to paleontology — were presented at the annual Sussex County 4-H public speaking contest on Jan. 28 at the University of Delaware Carvel Research and Education Center.
A full house of supporters and family members were in attendance to support the young speakers, who competed in four age divisions: Beginner (8-9 years old), intermediate (10-11) junior (12-13) and senior (14 and older.)
Prticipants members selected a topic of their choosing, focused their research and practiced their skills before presenting to an audience and a panel of judges.
The speeches of the older age divisions are longer in length.
The following youths won their respective age divisions and will repeat their speeches and compete at the state level during the Delaware State Fair in July:
• Joseph Anderson, of Milton, Del., Senior Division, “My Great Journey.” Hollymount 4-H Club;
• Emily Lester, Lewes, Del., Junior Division, “There’s an App for That!” Harbor Lights 4-H Club;
• Jill Koski, East New Market, Md. Intermediate Division, “Man’s Best Teacher.” Seaford Blue Jays 4-H Club; and
• Jenna Anger, Bridgeville, Del. Beginner Division, “Couponing – Extreme or Not.” Bridgeville Mustangs 4-H Club.
Besides being judged by their age category, contestants were evaluated on subject matter, thoroughness of their research, poise, appearance and natural delivery.
